Dr. Afua Forson, MD, LMFT

Clinical Collaborator

Dr. Forson is a MD-Psychotherapist with ten years of experience as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and over twenty years of experience as a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician. She is an active member of the Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada.

As a Clinical Collaborator at Body Brave, Dr. Forson explores the role of food in the context of interpersonal relationships and its impact on the sense of self. She is especially interested in the personal, cultural-intergenerational trauma that contributes to challenges pertaining to eating disorders.

Dr. Forson employs several clinical modalities: Internal Family Systems (IFS); Narrative Therapy; Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT); Contextual Family Therapy; and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Dr. Forson’s work at Body Brave does not involve prescribing medications.

Her practice is, at its core, a collaboration based on mutual respect, compassion and curiosity. These modalities provide the coping skills needed to identify and later challenge the negative beliefs that lies beneath one’s pain - one’s depression, anxiety or anger. In this process, the goal of each session is to create a safe and reflective environment for accessing that innate self-wisdom present in all of us - a cornerstone - where grace, self acceptance and understanding originates.
